Uncle Matt’s D&D Studio

Uncle Matt’s D&D Studio is about the freestyle, non-granular way of playing D&D that’s called “old-school” in the OSR — and while it doesn’t really have a name in the fifth edition D&D community, that free-style method of play is well established as one of the approaches to the game. Since the freestyle approach isn’t a precise overlap — system matters, after all — Uncle Matt’s D&D Studio has sections devoted specifically to the Traditional OSR and to Fifth Edition, as well as several sections of interest to both sections of the overall old-school community.

Ol’ Man Grognard

Glen Hallstrom, who also goes by the moniker of “Smokestack Jones,” “DM Glen,” and “Ol’ Man Grognard,” is possibly the OSR’s most prolific product-reviewer in the video realms of the OSR. Possibly this is why he has so many alternate identities and pseudonyms.

Conversation with Jeff Rients

My conversation with Jeff Rients, author of Jeff’s Gameblog (http://jrients.blogspot.com/) covers a lot of ground, including one thought about D&D that took me entirely by surprise — we’ll call that the Rashomon epiphany. Unfortunately, Jeff’s connection is iffy, so he occasionally appears to be a computer-generated image of one of the robot...

Weird Fantasy and Jeff Talanian

Weird Fantasy and Jeff Talanian

Jeff Talanian is perhaps the master of weird fantasy in the Old School Renaissance, and his Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Hyperborea stands beside D&D as a tremendously good genre-specific variant, allowing a much more streamlined avenue into the weird worlds of Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, HP Lovecraft, and other authors of pulp weird fantasy, all designed for a free-form old school type of approach. I unbox a copy of AS&SH with Jeff online (note: I’ve seen the original boxed set already — Jeff and I...
